Monk by the Sea Blog Post #1

This painting was made by German Caspar David Friedrich and it is an oil on canvas.  Friedrich is the oldest of the highest Romantics, and in this painting he portrayed the "land, sea, and sky."  I chose this painting because I live by the sea and felt as if I was able to connect with the monk who is looking out at the sea.  This painting seems very mysterious because as the viewer I wonder what the monk is thinking.  I like how the painting brings together the land, sea, and sky, but I think that it shows too much sky instead of evenly painting all three.
