I chose this painting by Salvador Dalí because it uses a familiar religious symbol, a crucifix, and gives you a new perspective of it. It is a very powerful image, the crucifix much larger than anything else in the painting. I also like the colors in the image; there are only earth tones. The shadows are also very interesting. After doing some research on the painting, it was pointed out that in this depiction of the crucifix is unusual in that there are no nails or signs of blood.

Head of an Angel Vincent Van Gogh

I chose the painting Head of an Angel by Vincent Van Gogh. This painting's medium is oil on canvas and it was completed in 1889 in Saint Remy, France. I really enjoy the bright and majestic colors he used, and the way in which he contrasted the color blue around the angel. The contrast he used really highlights and brings the viewer's attention to the angel's head.

This painting is interesting because of the darkness in color for a scene such as praying. The crucifix and skull in front of St. Francis make for a very dark scene and makes the viewer wonder what he could be praying about. St. Francis is known to have lived an exemplary life of holiness and model peace. This is a powerful painting in the Christian religion because the prayer of St. Francis is probably one of the most popular prayers next to the "Lord's Prayer".

I chose this piece because it's a call to the individual community of the United States that coalesce to form American society. The border reads "Just as the anatomy of man every nation must have its hind part: Alabama." This was done with two other states, Louisiana and Mississippi as a part of Indiana's "Confederacy" paintings. This painting is done to warn of unrecognized dangers of unwillingness to change and ignorance to narrow mindedness. How the injustice of a minority of a population effects the culture of the society and its politics. The stars that lead from top left to bottom right is to signify the Confederate flag and that these stars converge on the capital of Selma forming an "X."

This is a painting by Marc Chagall called "The newly weds and the violinist".
I feel that this painting portrays prayer or a religious aspect in the married couple.
There is also a sense of community with the display of the violinist, the man holding the animal, and the town in the background.
I feel that overall, the painting is about a village's traditions and the cycle of life.

The Last Supper

This painting was created by Emil Noble in 1909.  It is called "The Last Supper" and is an oil on canvas.  This painting shows many different dark colors.  I like this painting because it shows people just gathered together.  I thought this painting related to prayer because of its name.  I chose this painting because it portrays Jesus and his disciples as German peasants and it is a very simple painting.

Moses Receives the Ten Commandments by March Chagall 1966 

This work of art depicts the story in Exodus in the Bible, of Moses, receiving the ten commandments for Israel. This shows the God was with Israel and gave them a set of rules in order for them to follow. I like the way moses is over them showing the stone he wrote them in and everyone seems to be paying attention.
